Best described as “woven paintings “, my work combines weaving and painting in an elaborate interplay between techniques, suggesting both the commonalities and distinct concerns of working in different mediums. Uniting varying philosophies and mediums; paint and thread, and art and craft to create a form that is atypical yet cohesive while staying true to the individual qualities of each is much like having a conversation. The threads at times are meant to conceal and obscure and at other times add interest and unexpected twists and turns.  This juxtaposition of ideas, materials and process allows each piece to capture a melody that hints of masked motion, which at times is partially hidden and at other times accentuated by the interaction of threads with the paint.

The idea of weaving the paintings occurred while participating in two local study groups. One was a study of color theory with acrylic paints. The other was a study of weaving techniques. The assigned homework challenges were combined into one piece. This involves cutting the painting into strips, which are then woven back together using threads on a weaving loom. Combining painting and weaving began with that exercise and led to the development of woven paintings that now explores the interplay of materials, tradition and relationships.
