In Quiet Light is a contemplative new exhibit on display at UpMarket Gallery, featuring reflections of land, light, and stillness from three North & South Carolina artists. Come explore tone and subtle movement through light and form, where each piece embraces softness over spectacle, inviting viewers to slow down and experience the work in a more intimate, reflective way.
Cindi has spent a lifetime studying art and art history through coursework, private lessons, workshops, and visits to world-renowned museums in Europe and the United States. She is a portraitist (of humans and animals), as well as a painter of landscapes and still lifes. Her representational style is inspired by Russian landscape painters, such as Ivan Shishkin, the animalière Rosa Bonheur, the French Impressionists, and modern-day artists such as Richard Schmid and Robert Johnson.
As a painter, my objective is to suggest a scene to the viewer, supplying the shapes and color values of a scene while allowing conclusions and details to be drawn by the viewer’s imagination and memory.
My hope is that the viewer will place themselves in the painting. If, through my efforts, I am able to spark memories of a place and time, or allow the viewer to imagine same, I have accomplished what I set out to do.
An artist whose life is defined by resilience and observation, Patricia Sweet discovers beauty in the rugged and the refined. Her artistic journey began at age five, sparked by gifts of brushes and canvas from a grandmother and the joyful instruction of Bob Ross via rabbit-ear television. However, it was a childhood diagnosis of a rare bone disease that truly cemented Patricia’s path; confined to isolation, art provided a quiet solace, allowing creativity to flourish when physical activity could not. By age nine, She held her first solo exhibit at a local library.
