Mark E. Flowers earned his BFA in Studio Arts from The University of South Carolina in 1977 and his MFA in Painting from Western Michigan University in 1979.
Following his academic career, he has exhibited his work throughout the United States and in Europe. Mark’s work can be found in 26 public and over 300 private collections. Throughout his career he has won numerous awards for his art in both regional and national competitions. He also taught art on the secondary and university levels for 42 years.
He is now retired from teaching and pursues art making at his home just north of Asheville, North Carolina. In his artistic practice, he explores the interplay between shape and objective/non-objective imagery within a unified field of illusionary space. At a conceptual level, Mark views the work as a form of visual jazz, characterized by a free-form and abstract narrative. His artistic process has evolved over the years, now becoming more improvisational and spontaneous. Rooted in his instincts and experience, he mixes original digital imagery, paint, and form to reflect on his insights to life’s experiences.
